Allumette, a lovely animated feature by Penrose Studios, illustrates why virtual reality film should be taken just as seriously as traditional film.

The folks at Sundance and the Tribeca Film Festival have already figured this out — both festivals showcased virtual reality this year. But in such early days, the quality of each VR experience varies wildly from project to project.

That’s why Penrose Studios — founded by Oculus’ first cinematic hire, Eugene Chung — surprised me yesterday. Here’s a behind-the-scenes teaser of Allumette:

Italian water transportation company Jet Capsule unveils their latest seafaring concept, the “UFO”. Standing for unidentified floating object, the saucer-like unit is an energy autonomous vessel capable of estimated speeds of up to three knots (3.5mph). “UFO” measures 12.5 meters in diameter, and uses various systems to take advantage of all natural elements. The floating object includes two habitable areas – other than the outer deck. A main level area houses the kitchen, and a floor access point connects to a sub-level bathroom and underwater viewing area. Jet Capsule is currently seeking investors to develop a working “UFO” prototype.

UFO is a living floating house which can move around the world with leisurely maximum speed of 3.5 knots (6.5 km/h, 4 mph), using a waterjet-propelled Torqeedo Deep Blue 1800 electric motor.

This motor is connected to a battery that draws energy generated from 40 sq. m (430 sq. ft.) of solar panels in a closable lid atop the structure.
Additional energy sources can be provided through optional wind and water turbines located on the top and below the main disc of the UFO, respectively, creating enough power to operate the home and motor.

A water generator would be used for converting rain or seawater to fresh drinking water, as well as watering a vegetable garden located on a deck that encircles the structure and measures 12.5 m (41 ft) in diameter.

Two half-spherical shells of fiberglass make up the two stories of the interior housing, with flexible floor plans for various configurations.

The spherical-shaped home will consist of a transformable kitchen and dining/living area on a 20-sq. m (215-sq. ft.) top level, with stairs leading down to a 10-sq. m (107-sq. ft.) submerged lower level with bathroom and bedroom surrounded by a large window for viewing sea life.

To keep the craft stable, the UFO uses a special elastic anchor system. “The main structure of the floating object can be aligned with the compass, keeping the position angle oriented on the desired cardinal direction, even in rough sea conditions.

From home décor to medical prosthetics, robotic parts to aircraft interiors, 3D printing is the future of manufacturing. APWorks, a 100% subsidiary of Airbus Group, has worked at the forefront of additive layer manufacturing (ALM) and advanced materials since its launch in 2013., APWorks produces bionically optimized metal parts for a wide range of industries, from aerospace to automotive and robotics. Its newest creation? The world’s first 3D-printed motorcycle, made using APWorks’ Scalmalloy® material, weighing in at a svelte 35 kg.

APWorks just announced the creation of the world’s first 3D-printed motorcycle that can actually be used as a daily rider. Aptly named the Light Rider, given that it weighs in at a mere 35 kg (77 lb), the electric-powered two-wheeler appears to be what would happen if H.R. Geiger designed a motorcycle. The company said the exoskeleton-like design of the Light Rider came from the need to make the frame structurally able to withstand the loads and stresses of everyday riding. Powered by a 6-kW (8-hp) electric motor with a top speed of 80 km/h (50 mph), it may not be at home on the freeway, but can be used for daily city driving and commuting. The frame of the Light Rider weighs all of 6 kg (13 lb) and is made of a material created and patented by APWorks called Scalmalloy. This is a second-generation aluminum-magnesium-scandium alloy (AlMgS) that the company claims is stronger than the aluminum-silicon powder material used in most production-scale 3D printing today. The use of Scalmalloy allowed APWorks to create hollow rather than solid frame parts, which made it easier to hide most of the cables and other elements that might be more visible on a standard motorcycle. Bionic algorithms were also used to optimize the entire structure, resulting in a cleaner overall design and a finished bike that weighs 30 percent lighter than other eBikes currently in production.

With Light’s googly-eyed, multi-lensed camera—the L16—quantity and quality exist simultaneously. When taking a photo, the camera’s whopping 16 different lenses fire a once, piecing together a massive 52-megapixel image, and it’s all controlled through a user-friendly operating system and touchscreen. The first-of-its-kind camera is now available for pre-order, with plans to deliver during the summer of 2016.

Some time ago we’ve already shown you very interesting concept of snowmobile concept. And here is another one – RDSV – Rapid Deployment Snow Vehicle. This concept was created by industrial designer from Buenos Aires, Argentina – Juan Garcia Mansilla. As designer says “The RDSV is a 2 seater high speed vehicle for use in any polar environment. It would aptly serve polar exploration, rescue missions, medical emergencies or even sport applications, basically anything that requires high speeds through a polar environment. The whole idea started with the traction system, something that could allow high speeds across Antarctica but could also climb up a mountain for an avalanche rescue operation. Then the whole vehicle was built around it. RDSV features an adaptive traction system that allows for an effective displacement over both ice/hard snow or deep snow. Each wheel is made up by twelve individual units, each with two different paddles: a small one (for hard surfaces) and a big one (for deep snow). Depending on the terrain, each unit rotates accordingly to expose the desired paddle.” Also dont’ forget to check the video.

InFocus debuted the Kangaroo, a $99 Windows 10 portable PC that “goes anywhere and works with any screen.” The term “mobile desktop” may seem like an oxymoron, but that really is the best description: Picture your typical desktop PC tower shrunk down to the size of a phablet sans screen; just like any desktop, you’ll still need to connect a mouse, keyboard, and monitor. Kangaroo is available on Newegg now, and will go on sale at the Microsoft Store by mid-November.

The pitch is simple: Kangaroo offers the power of a cheap full-sized computer with the convenience and mobility of a cell phone. The black satin aluminum device is powered by an Intel Cherrytrail (Z8500) SOC, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of storage (only about 18GB is free when you first start it, but storage is expandable via a microSD card), and an on-board battery (up to four hours of “casual use”). The standalone Kangaroo Dock, which you can swap out for other future docks, includes an HDMI port and two USB ports.

Aerion Corporation, of Reno, Nev., is taking orders now for its supersonic private jet, the Aerion AS2. Last year Airbus Group agreed to lend engineering support to the company, and the aircraft is now in development. The company says its proprietary laminar-flow technology reduces aerodynamic drag over the wings by up to 80 percent, enabling the three-engine jet to achieve efficient long-range flight. Supersonic speeds can cut flight time by 3 hours between Paris and Washington, D.C., and by 6.5 hours between San Francisco and Singapore, the company says. Supersonic flight is currently prohibited above the land areas of the United States and many other countries, due to concerns about sonic booms; however, flight speed above oceans is unrestricted. Aerion is working to develop its Boomless Cruise technology that would ensure the shock waves created by supersonic flight would dissipate well above ground level. The AS2 will be built mainly from carbon fiber, with titanium alloy along the leading edge of each wing. The 30-foot-long cabin will seat up to 11. Maximum range is expected to be about 5,400 miles, and top speed is Mach 1.5. The company hopes the first $120 million AS2 will be flying by 2021.

To put it in the simplest terms, 4K Ultra HD directly translates to 4000 pixels wide in resolution. This is far superior to standard HD and it’s the next wave in viewing—and capturing videos. With electric avation specialist Yuneec International‘s latest, theTyphoon Q500 4K drone, that kind of filming capability comes in a sleek, easy-to-use unmanned machine. It’s not the first 4K drone on the market, but right now it’s the most advanced at its price point. More than just 4K filming, there is an array of features that make it worthwhile.
