From home décor to medical prosthetics, robotic parts to aircraft interiors, 3D printing is the future of manufacturing. APWorks, a 100% subsidiary of Airbus Group, has worked at the forefront of additive layer manufacturing (ALM) and advanced materials since its launch in 2013., APWorks produces bionically optimized metal parts for a wide range of industries, from aerospace to automotive and robotics. Its newest creation? The world’s first 3D-printed motorcycle, made using APWorks’ Scalmalloy® material, weighing in at a svelte 35 kg.

APWorks just announced the creation of the world’s first 3D-printed motorcycle that can actually be used as a daily rider. Aptly named the Light Rider, given that it weighs in at a mere 35 kg (77 lb), the electric-powered two-wheeler appears to be what would happen if H.R. Geiger designed a motorcycle. The company said the exoskeleton-like design of the Light Rider came from the need to make the frame structurally able to withstand the loads and stresses of everyday riding. Powered by a 6-kW (8-hp) electric motor with a top speed of 80 km/h (50 mph), it may not be at home on the freeway, but can be used for daily city driving and commuting. The frame of the Light Rider weighs all of 6 kg (13 lb) and is made of a material created and patented by APWorks called Scalmalloy. This is a second-generation aluminum-magnesium-scandium alloy (AlMgS) that the company claims is stronger than the aluminum-silicon powder material used in most production-scale 3D printing today. The use of Scalmalloy allowed APWorks to create hollow rather than solid frame parts, which made it easier to hide most of the cables and other elements that might be more visible on a standard motorcycle. Bionic algorithms were also used to optimize the entire structure, resulting in a cleaner overall design and a finished bike that weighs 30 percent lighter than other eBikes currently in production.

The Alfa Romeo 4C Spider displays a design reminiscent of the marque’s 33 Stradale from the late 1960s – a V-8-powered car that could cover a kilometer faster than any other production car; not even the V-12-powered Lamborghini Miura or Ferrari Daytona could catch it. Like the 33 Stradale, the 4C Spider is quick and agile because its design is based on the principle that speed is a function of weight and engine power. It weighs less than 2,500 pounds thanks to a monocoque tub and body panels made of carbon fiber. And though the 4C Spider has about half the power of Alfa Romeo’s 8C Competizione, it is just as fast. In addition to its speed, the 33 Stradale was distinguished by its high price; it was the most expensive car on the market in its time. The 4C Spider, however, with a starting price of just under $64,000, costs far less than any other carbon-fiber-bodied sports car.

Some time ago we’ve already shown you very interesting concept of snowmobile concept. And here is another one – RDSV – Rapid Deployment Snow Vehicle. This concept was created by industrial designer from Buenos Aires, Argentina – Juan Garcia Mansilla. As designer says “The RDSV is a 2 seater high speed vehicle for use in any polar environment. It would aptly serve polar exploration, rescue missions, medical emergencies or even sport applications, basically anything that requires high speeds through a polar environment. The whole idea started with the traction system, something that could allow high speeds across Antarctica but could also climb up a mountain for an avalanche rescue operation. Then the whole vehicle was built around it. RDSV features an adaptive traction system that allows for an effective displacement over both ice/hard snow or deep snow. Each wheel is made up by twelve individual units, each with two different paddles: a small one (for hard surfaces) and a big one (for deep snow). In the heart of Japan, skilled craftsmen are quietly working on low riding electric motorcycle named Zecoo. Assembled by hand, many parts of the bike are made from sculpted aluminum alloy block with an innovative frame layout that is centered around the electric components. Iin addition, the hub steering mechanism designed to accommodate the battery’s weight to maintain steering ability without changing the riders posture. The power unit comes from Zero Motorcycles, provides a maximum torque of 144 Nm with smooth acceleration that is uninterrupted by any shifting gears. The Zecoo electric motorcycle was designed by Kota Nezu from Znug Design. The Toyko native worked for Toyota before starting the acclaimed design studio. Unfortunately, the electric bike will be limited to only 49 units, which will be customized and decorated according to individual demand.

venier customs x moto guzzi V7 | tractor 03 scrambler | ‘tractor 03′ is the third build of five in the limited-edition tractor series by stefano venier of venier customs. the donor bike for the project is a 2011 moto guzzi V7. the full-aluminum body is covered with a dark green matte, with black and gold strips and logo. a typical scrambler in appearance, the ‘tractor 03′ nevertheless maintains a high level of comfort and modernity, and best of all, there’s room for two.

After working their magic on the stunning Yamaha XS650, Thrive Motorcycles are back again with an impressive and creative build, based on a 1984 Yamaha Scorpio. The unusual body is the result of a rough sketch drawn at the briefing with the client, it is made from aluminum to achieve the grey industrial look but to also save precious weight. The eccentric ride was also fitted with Kenda trial tyres, a custom clutch and brake lever, a custom dashboard with indicators and a GPS/phone mount, and some custom switch gear. They also covered the custom-made stainless steel exhaust with a grey exhaust wrap to match the overall look.

 

Ever thought you’d see a Cougar connoisseur? You have now.

Mike Brown’s been collecting, restoring, and selling classic Mercury Cougars for at least three decades now. One could easily call it an addiction. He had nine cars on the first day of filming. By the second, he had ten.

It’s an odd choice of car. The Cougar’s long been relegated to the shadow of its Ford sibling, the Mustang. Despite awards and a respectable track career, the classic Cougar has failed to generate the mainstream appeal of the Mustang, Camaro, and ‘Cuda.

That may not be such a bad thing, though. Where Boss 429 Mustangs and Camaro Z/28s command absurd prices–granted, less than they did before the market crash–Cougars in top trim fetch a fraction of those numbers. That’s a bargain when you consider how well-equipped the Cougar was.

And Mike Brown has them all: Hertz Rent-a-Racers, Cobra-Jets, GTs, Eliminators… We wouldn’t expect anything less from the president and founder of the Southern California Cougar Club.

What began as building motorcycles in his kitchen became a full-time gig for Brian Sloma. After listing one of his creations on Craigslist, and things just spiralled from there.

“You see a car for nothing but a car,” says Brian Sloma, “…even if it has rims, is wrapped, and has wings—it’s still the same car. But you take a bike, you change the tank and the seat…what is it?”

Finding bikes they like, fixing them up, and updating them is perhaps not as well-known as the firm’s now-flagship creation, a BMW R 90/6 that’s been heavily modified—from its Honda fuel tank on down.

“Some people thought it was cool, some people thought it was awesome, some people thought it was just…ridiculous, and, like, that it shouldn’t belong,” says Ken Chan.

Using many custom tricks that have since fallen by the wayside, the Spirit Lake duo says they’re still small enough to not have a ton of pressure on their shoulders if something doesn’t quite turn out the way they’d envisioned.

“We don’t have a distinct style, but we have a distinct method,” says Sloma. “It’s cleanliness, when we put something together, it looks factory—or, it’s functional—it can be beat on, dropped…there’s different mindsets for where you want to go.”

For those who don’t have a motorcycle yet, don’t worry, Sloma’s advice is simple: “…try it, and if you like it, you like it. If you don’t you don’t…but you probably will!”

To convey the strong bond between Ducati and Pirelli, the two Italian companies decide to collaborate on an artistic motorcycle with Vibrazioni Art Design. The result is dubbed the ‘SC-rumble’, a specially made, drastically altered Ducati ‘scrambler’ that is equipped with Pirelli ‘MT 60 RS’ tires. The stock chassis was shortened in the back and all the original lids were removed in favor of a monocoque made of sheets recovered from industrial bins, which were hammered and shaped by hand. The shell was then coated with a transparent polyurethane gloss, finished to accentuate the shine and give the surface a smooth touch.
