What’s the first thing that comes to mind when asked what brands like Coca-Coa, L’Oréal, Ford, and Ray-Ban have in common with today’s popular culture? EveryInstrumental breaks it down for you plainly… The Remix

Remixes didn’t always exist in this form, and the term “remix” itself wasn’t as ubiquitous. Thanks to the research of the team at EveryInstrumental.com, they’ve broken down the many facets of the “remix” and how they have evolved with our “History of the Remix” infographic.

The prevalence of remixes has exploded over the past 30 years. There were only 79 officially released remixes in 1980. By 2010, that number jumped to more than 30,000 released remixes! Remixed releases went from being a sliver of available music in 1980 (0.1%) to an entire FIFTH of all music released in 2010 (20%).
The remix actually began as we know it today in Jamaica in the 1960s, where studio geniuses such as “Scratch” Perry and King Tubby stripped the instrumentals from tracks to create new versions of a record. As time went on, Americans in the 70s started to play around with original records during the Disco era to create dance versions of tracks. These two aforementioned sounds collided in New York to create hip-hop. The 80s saw a rise in remixes in pop, as well as the beginnings of “sampling” records, seen in electronic and hip-hop music. The 90s saw the rise of the remix as it is more commonly known: new instrumentals, new verses, sometimes both on a song to create something entirely different than the original record. The 2000s saw the rise of the freestyle, as well as chopped & screwed music. Near the end of the aughts and the beginning of the 2010s, we end up where we are today, with the resurgence in electronic dance music thriving off of remixes to get shows hyped up.

We utilized the twitter following of our sister site DJServicePack.com as well as currently published rankings to determine the GREATEST remix of all-time. Without a doubt, the majority of the love was for Craig Mack’s “Flava In Ya Ear” remix featuring Busta Rhymes, Diddy, LL Cool J, The Notorious B.I.G. & Rampage. The 90s and early 2000s are strong on the ranking, with ATCQ’s “Scenario” remix and Talib Kweli’s “Get By” grabbing the next two spots. Biggie’s “One More Chance” is at #4, followed by the most recent entries, The Game’s epic “One Blood” remix featuring most of the music industry, and Jermaine Dupri’s all-American “Welcome To Atlanta” remix. MOP’s “Ante Up” remix rounds out our list.

Brands couldn’t let such a cultural paradigm shift go to waste at this point, now could they? Large companies such as Starbucks, Ford, Sprite, and more worked “Remix” into various marketing and ad campaigns, with the “Sprite Remix” soda line being the most noteworthy.

Continuing to reinforce its classification as the black TV network that isn’t referred to as a black TV network,VH1 has teamed up with filmmakers Billy Corben and Alfred Spellman and author, advertising executive, and record executive Steve Stoute for a 4-part documentary series based on Stoute’s best-selling book, The Tanning of America: How Hip-Hop Created a Culture That Rewrote the Rules of the New Economy.

To be titled The Tanning of America: One Nation Under Hip Hop, the 4-parter will give audiences what the press release describes as a thorough examination of hip-hop as a cultural movement, whose profound influence in music, film, television, fashion, business, race relations and politics eventually paved the way for the election of Barack Obama.

The 4-part 4-hour series will feature never-seen-before footage and interviews from numerous pop culture icons and entertainment personalities in America: Diddy, Dr Dre, Mariah Carey, Will.i.am, Russell Simmons, Pharrell, Nas,Reverend Run, Rick Rubin, Fab 5 Freddy, Jimmy Iovine, Al Sharpton, Cory Booker, Brett Ratner, Brian Grazer, Tommy Hilfiger, Ron Howard, Steve Stoute and many more.

The series will premiere on February 24, 2014 on VH1.

More from the release:

VH1’s “The Tanning of America: One Nation Under Hip Hop” provides a visual history of the hip-hopification of America – what Stoute calls “tanning” — from “The Jeffersons” to the Fresh Prince; from “Do the Right Thing” to “8 Mile”; from the streets of Compton to Madison Ave; from block parties to the Hamptons; and from rappers to entrepreneurs to icons. The series unfolds in 4 one-hour episodes that together explore history’s pivotal tanning moments from the 1970’s to present day, and show how hip-hop is deeply woven into the American cultural fabric. It’s the history of hip-hop remixed: an epic journey that begins in the Bronx and travels all the way to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

Through engaging and intimate first person stories, “Tanning” takes viewers where they’ve never been before: inside a steamy Madison Square Garden, when Russell Simmons cut a deal with Adidas sneakers during a Run DMC concert… inside the Harvard dorm room where two white Jewish kids decide to start The Source magazine… inside the car of fashion icon Tommy Hilfiger, as he drives through the streets of Harlem finding inspiration in baggy jeans… to the streets of Paris as Diddy takes over Europe for a Vogue fashion shoot… to a New York music studio where Mariah Carey collaborates with O.D.B, forever fusing pop and hip hop; and with Dr Dre as he first hears a rapper who calls himself Eminem.

Over the last three decades, hip-hop culture has been transformed from an underground urban movement to mass culture, permeating virtually every aspect of American life: the music we listen to, the clothes we wear, the food we eat, the cars we drive. Hip-hop has done more to erase perceptions about racial distinctions for the generations that grew up exposed to it than any other force since the Civil Rights Movement. There’s now a whole generation of Americans who grew up immersed in this culture that are, for all intents and purposes, colorblind. This is the true story of that evolution.

Rick Ross just released the tracklist to his upcoming album called Mastermind (out March 4), and without surprise it has an A-listed roster. We already knew Jay Z was on the LP for “The Devil Is a Lie,” but the other features include Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Big Sean, The Weeknd, Jeezy and Meek Mill.

Ye and his G.O.O.D. Music signee Big Sean join forces on “Sanctified,” while Weezy appears on a cut called “Thug Cry.” As for The Weeknd’s collab, it sounds druggy with the title “In Vein.” Mastermind clocks in at 16 tracks, plus three bonus tracks including a reprise of “FuckWithMeYouKnowIGotIt,” Rozay’s collaboration with Hov from Magna Carta Holy Grail. In addition, Ross announced Diddy is the album’s co-executive producer.
